Google is gearing up to unveil the Pixel 8 series next month, and anticipation is building as we expect these phones to be powered by the Tensor G3 processor. However, a Tensor G4 leak surfaced earlier this week, and today, we’ve received further insights into the Pixel 9’s processor.

Tech_Reve, a reliable leaker, revealed on X that the Tensor G4 will feature the newly announced Cortex-X4, Cortex-A720, and Cortex-A520 CPU cores. They also mentioned that the chipset will be manufactured using the same Samsung “4LPP+ process (sic)” as the Exynos 2400, which appears to refer to Samsung’s second-generation 4nm manufacturing process.

Tensor G4 CPU: A Sensible Upgrade?

While we don’t have specific details about the CPU layout just yet, it seems like a logical step forward from the Tensor G3. The Pixel 8 chip reportedly comprises one Cortex-X3 core, four Cortex-A715 cores, and four smaller Cortex-A510 cores. Considering this, it’s likely that the Tensor G4 and the Pixel 9 series will launch after Arm unveils its latest CPU cores. This suggests that the Tensor G4 may not boast the most cutting-edge Android CPU technology for an extended period.

Another noteworthy point is Google’s apparent choice to adopt a second-generation Samsung 4nm design for the 2024 Tensor chip. The Tensor G3 is believed to have been manufactured by Samsung using a 4nm process, although it remains uncertain whether this was a first- or second-generation design. Regardless, we hope that Samsung has addressed any manufacturing issues that led to underwhelming performance with the vanilla Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip.

Tech_Reve also reiterated their earlier claim that the Tensor G4 will retain the Arm Immortalis-G715 GPU from the Tensor G3. As a result, it’s advisable to keep your performance expectations in check when it comes to gaming.
