Qualcomm has officially introduced its cutting-edge AR/VR platforms known as Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and AR1 Gen 1. These platforms are poised to facilitate mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences in slim and lightweight devices that do not necessitate an external battery pack. This opens up opportunities for other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to enter this space, which is expected to gain traction following the release of Apple’s Vision Pro.

The Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 is arguably the more remarkable of the two chips. It offers 2.5 times superior GPU performance compared to its predecessor, an 8-fold boost in AI performance, support for up to 10 cameras and sensors, dual 3K displays (2x 3K displays), and features the latest Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP).

On the other hand, the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform is tailored for lightweight smart glasses with MR capabilities. Additionally, it enables functionalities such as recording and live-streaming directly from the glasses, enhanced visual searches, and real-time translation.

Both of these platforms have been developed in collaboration with Meta and are set to debut in Meta devices as early as this year. For instance, the Meta Quest 3 will be powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Platform, while the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses will utilize the Snapdragon AR1 Platform. Other OEMs will also have the opportunity to create their own devices using these newly announced chips, starting in 2024.
